Chinanews, Beijing, December 25 – The National Grain Administration estimates that 60% of grain produced in China are stored in the family storehouses of individual farmers, and the poor equipment of such storehouses have caused a loss of 11 billion – 17.5 billion kg of grain every year, to the value of around 2 billion yuan.
“Had the conditions of such family storehouses been improved, 5 billion kg of lost grains would have been saved, almost equal to the total output of 1.97 million acres of rich farmland,” said Xi Jianwei, deputy director of the National Grain Administration.
Most farmers just piled up the bags of grain by the the walls of their storehouses, while some bags were only used to contain pesticides.
Last November, China started its farm-storage-loss-saving project, and its current goal is to help 5 million farmers to improve their storehouses before 2016, and those 5 million farmers will serve as demonstrations to farmers in other parts of China.
